Water Where You Want to Grow: How You Can Grow and Change Your Brain

September 12, 2018

Did you know that the brain grows and changes from sensory input? Everything you hear, see, smell, taste, or experience influences how your brain develops. This includes internal as well as external input. Therefore, the music you listen to, the thoughts you entertain, the people you spend time with, the books you read, the words you hear and say, the food you eat, the way you move or don't move your body, and more all have the power to impact how the pathways in your brain develop or change.

This can be a scary idea when you feel like you don't have control over what your senses are exposed to. But there is a hopeful side to this as well. It means that your brain can change when you change the type of sensory input it receives. Sure, there is some of it you can't control, but you have more power than you think. Making small changes like becoming aware of the music you listen to and choosing music that helps you hear and believe the things that help you be healthier and happier can have a great impact.

If you want something to change in your life, you can start by changing the sensory input your brain receives. Do you want to be better at gardening? Great! You can help develop your brain to be good at gardening. You can think about gardening, listen to gardening podcasts, read books about gardening, keep a gardening journal, socialize with gardeners, and actually practice gardening. The more senses you can engage, the greater impact it can have on your brain.

Do you want to have healthier relationships? You can have that as well by managing what sensory input your brain receives. You can learn about healthy relationships, listen to music that talks about relationships in a healthy way, practice getting to know yourself better, spend time with those who are also interested in having healthier relationships, and you can practice the things that lead to healthy relationships with yourself and others. You can also participate in equine assisted activities that are geared towards helping you discover and practice the kinds of sensory input you need to grow your brain towards having healthy relationships.

Do you want to learn to ask for what you need in a relationship? You can practice that with a horse and learn how to do it in a way that builds your relationships.  Insert the guidance of a certified equine assisted therapy team, and you have an effective way to engage all of your senses in empowering you to appropriately ask for what you need in a relationship.

Maybe you want to learn to be a better listener in your relationships. Imagine learning to listen and respond to the needs of a 1,000 pound being who doesn't have verbal language. It is often that which is unspoken that we don't know how to hear. Working with a horse can help you learn to listen to yourself and others on the deepest levels so that you can respond in ways that help your relationships grow and thrive.

Perhaps you don't know what it is that you want or need or where to start with improving your life. Engaging with a horse with the guidance of a trained professional can help you discover yourself, your needs, your desires, and how to secure an extraordinary life.
