About the event
Do you have a kid that:
- struggles to make friends?
- has trouble forming lasting friendships?
- needs help managing conflicts with friends?
- is the "doormat" in their friend group?
- rarely gets invited to participate in activites with peers?
- enjoys reading and learning from doing?
- likes to be outdoors?
- is curious about horses?
The Good Friends and Good Horses group may fill a need in your summer plans.Â
In this equine- assisted learning group, kids will explore how to build meaningful and lasting friendships with the help of horses. This group will be limited to 8 participants so kids will have focused time with horses, build connection through fun activites and adventures together on our 40- acre horse property, and enjoy a real-time book study about how to make friends with a horse. Kids will recieve a copy of  The Gift by Rebecca J. Hubbard and be guided through making friends with real horses alongside the adventures of 11 yr old Pip and her young horse, Buck, the two main characters of The Gift. The Gift was written specifically to help kids learn about how to build healthy relationships that focus on consent, meaningful connection, and mutually beneficial managment of conflict.Â
Kids who learn to create a solid foundation for healthy relationships do better in school, have better mental health, and grow to be stronger communicators.
In our program, kids practice building healthy relationships with a horse. During this process, unhealthy patterns surface and facilitators help kids recognize and learn to change the pattern in the moment. When they change these patterns in the moment, they begin to build new healthy pathways for relating to others. They then get to see the results of thier efforts unfold as their relationship with their horse changes and grows. The lessons they learn with thier horses are meant to transfer to building healthy human relationships. Over these 6 weekly 90 minute groups, kids will:Â
- Learn how to discern healthy and unhealthy relationships
- Learn to stand up for themselves in ways that help them build healthy friendships with real friends and avoid unhealthy friendships with fake friends
- Learn to recognize their own needs as well as the needs of others.
